The saga of Krishna Rajaram Ashtekar is about grit, determination, honesty and devotion to this profession. It’s a journey that only a few can undertake and carry on. KRA has been fortunate enough to create jewelry adorning many gods across India. Krishna Rajaram Ashtekar has also been privileged to be chosen to decorate abodes of Gods and Goddesses.
The legacy of Ashtekars goes back to more than 800 years. Our ancestors, hailing from Ashti, in Jalna district of Maharashtra, were engaged in multiple businesses. The main business, however, was manufacturing and trading of jewelry, gems and precious stones.
Pune became the hub of trade and commerce during the glorious era of the Peshwas’ and Ashtekars started travelling to Pune for business. Gradually, the business scaled great heights, owing to the superb business acumen of Ashtekars in the reign of Peshwas. The advent of the British rule though, severely affected the traditional businesses across India. The jewelry business in Ashti by Ashtekars was no exception.
In 1923, two brothers Waman Nimbaji and Bhausaheb Ashtekar migrated to Pune for better trade and commerce avenues. They started a small ‘Pedhi’ at Saraaf Bazaar on Sonya Maruti Chowk. Laudably, Saraaf Bazaar was and till date is the main market for gold, silver and precious stones. The small pedhi soon gained reputation as one of the most trusted jewelers in the area. The business flourished in a short span of time.
